I was a 3-sport athlete in high school, working out was a part of my life since I was 15. I have done multiple types of workouts and many different styles of lifting. When I went to play college basketball I began a new type of program that incorporated cardio exercises with my lifting. Since my college days are long in the past, I went back to the same old monotonous workout routine where I was lifting 6 days a week, one body part a day, with 30 min of cardio at the end of each workout. I felt myself hating the gym and viewing it as a job. I started to plateau and my gains where few and far, I also started seeing my waist line grow, as well. I needed to find a new workout; I thought this new thing called CrossFit would help. But when I read up about the workouts, I was nervous: how could a 10 min WOD give me the muscle pump that I got from lifting heavy weights? How could just doing push-ups, sit-ups and pull-ups for 20 min make me feel like I got in a good workout? I had people explain to me, that CrossFit was not just a workout but a community and every “box” was different. So, I decided that I would give Crossfit 3 months. It has been 7 months now and I am a CrossFit junkie.
Aside from the WOD’s, the hardest thing for me to learn is humility. CrossFit was/is a very humbling experience for me. But I learned from Rob & Ron that technique and form is the key to CrossFit. Once you master a movement the weight will quickly go up. What I love most about CrossFit is we all are going for the best time, the most reps or rounds, but when the clock is done we just look around at each other and there is a sense of accomplishment in every member. We know all know at that moment, we just accomplished a task together as a group. And this group mentality is a reflection of the coaches.
Rob & Ron, take the time to push each one of us, and in our own way, I think when we are working out we are pushing ourselves to show them that their coaching is working, and appreciated.
CrossFit Wallingford is a very special place and the people that make up our box are some of the hardest working people I have ever been around. No matter how hard the WOD is or how tried we all get, we push through and every time it gets more and more amazing. I look back on the decision to join CrossFit and I am glad I made the decision to do this because it has become one of the best things I have ever done. Thanks to box and the coaches, I am proud to be a member.
Congratulations to Mike for being CrossFitter of the month. Mike is a great athlete who always gives his all, but more importantly he is always willing to help another member. On many occasions we have seen Mike working with people after the WOD. It’s not only about getting better, but about being a good CFW member… Congrats again Mike keep up the great work!
